How Old Would You Be If You Didn’t Know How Old You Were?
Might want to read that question a couple of times, I know I did!
I asked my Tuesday Pilates class that question last week – you don’t do Pilates with me, you experience it and my classes can get a little philosophical, not to mention hysterical.
And that’s how it should be.
Back to the question
My eldest client is 82. Off the bat he said “I’m middle aged”.
I like his thinking. He attends Pilates sessions with me twice per week and his wife once. Exercise is important to both of them.
“Keeps the little grey cells active” he said.
“So what age would you be then?” I asked him
As he executed the perfect Shoulder Bridge he pondered the question some more.
“I think it’s not about how old you are, I think it’s about the passing of time and actually how old you feel. But there’s a catch, I don’t feel like I’m 82 but then I’ve never been 82 before so how would I know how I’m supposed to feel?”
I had to think about that. He had a point.
HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO FEEL AT ANY AGE?
Joseph Pilates (the guy who developed the exercise regimen) once said “You are only as young as your spine is flexible. If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30 you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60 you are young”.
My client added “age is but a number anyway. I feel in the prime of my life and I’m still having fun”.
I didn’t ask what the fun might be, didn’t want to open that can of worms!!
So, how old are you really? Share your thoughts.
